In digital projects often, we hear the words “digital inclusion” and consider accessibility for customers.
To include our users, we have to include each other in the first place and often we see a lack of that within UX & project teams.
Most people call it collaboration, team building, but after all, it’s including all the disciplines in the same conversation, in the same group, to enable everyone to contribute to the ultimate outcome. Deliver ONE product or service that is usable, useful and that gives back ROI to the people and the business. (We should also include accessible and sustainable but it will be covered in later posts)
There is a background complaint from UX people that say they don’t have a seat at the table, or they are unable to do their job.
UX starts from the problem, not the process.
To find buy-in, it’s about professionalism, empathy, and compassion towards your peers as well as towards your users.
As UX professionals we certainly apply leadership at any level of the organisation.
To bring everyone together we have to use leadership and negotiating skills that help enable everyone share their point of view.
A word of warning, we are not promoting design by the collective but instead is collaborative design.
Anyone can have a valuable idea then it’s up to us to glue it together with the rest.
Ryan Rumsey explains in his book how to apply User Research with your team to understand each individuals’ objectives.
Then you can puzzle that together to understand the overarching agenda and the gravitation pull of single individual.
At that point you’ll be able to bring everyone together.
You’ll be seen as the glue of the team.
